TouchArcade Rating:
Capcom's recent update to the iOS and iPadOS versions of Resident Evil 7 biohazard, Resident Evil 4 Remake, and Resident Evil Village introduces a frustrating change: mandatory online DRM. While updates often improve optimization or compatibility, this update requires an internet connection to verify your purchase before launching any of the games. This means offline play is no longer possible. The game will check your purchase history upon startup; refusing the check results in the game closing.
Prior to this update, all three games functioned offline. This unwelcome addition significantly diminishes the user experience for those who purchased the games previously. While some may not be affected, the imposition of this always-online DRM is a significant drawback. Ideally, Capcom will revise this system to perform purchase verification less frequently, or find an alternative solution that doesn't prevent offline play. This update unfortunately impacts the recommendation of these premium-priced mobile ports.
For those who haven't purchased the games yet, free trials are available. You can download Resident Evil 7 biohazard here, Resident Evil 4 Remake here, and Resident Evil Village here. My reviews of each title can be found here, here, and here.
