Half of PlayStation 5 users bypass the console's rest mode, opting for a complete system shutdown instead, according to Sony. This surprising statistic, revealed by Cory Gasaway, Sony Interactive Entertainment's vice president, highlights the diverse preferences among PS5 owners. The revelation emerged during an interview discussing the design of the PS5's Welcome Hub, a feature introduced in 2024 to create a more unified user experience.
The Welcome Hub's development was directly influenced by this 50/50 split in rest mode usage. The team, working during a PlayStation hackathon, aimed to address the differing preferences. The Hub's design presents users in the US with the PS5 Explore page, while users elsewhere see their most recently played game. This customizable approach aims for a more consistent and personalized starting point for all PS5 players.
While no single reason explains the avoidance of rest mode, some users report internet connectivity issues when using the feature. Others simply prefer keeping the console fully powered on during downloads. Despite its energy-saving benefits and intended functionality for background downloads and game resumption, a significant portion of the user base chooses not to utilize rest mode. This data provides valuable insight into user behavior and informs the design choices behind the PS5's user interface.
