Tarneeb, widely recognized across Arab countries, particularly in the Levant, is a beloved card game. In the Arab Gulf states, it's known as "rule." The primary goal of Tarneeb is to win consecutive rounds, known as "Tarneeb groups." Played by four individuals divided into two teams of two, the game continues until one team emerges victorious at the end of the rounds.
The game utilizes a standard 52-card deck, excluding Jokers. The gameplay begins with the player to the left of the dealer making the first move. The four players, seated in pairs opposite each other, form the two teams.
Cards are initially dealt starting from the player to the dealer's right. The bidding process, which determines the trump suit, starts with the player to the dealer's right and proceeds in ascending order from 7 up to 13 ("Cabot" or "livers"). The highest bidder selects the Tarneeb suit.
If a team fails to meet their bid, they face a penalty. For example, if a team bids for 10 tricks but only wins 9, they lose 10 points, while the opposing team gains the points they won, say 4 in this case. Conversely, if the opposing team wins 5 tricks, their score is adjusted accordingly.
The game concludes once a team reaches a predetermined score, typically 61 or 31, depending on the agreement made before starting the game.
The card hierarchy in Tarneeb is as follows:
