The "Digital Revolution of Devarattam" app is a project dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of Devarattam, a traditional folk dance of Tamil Nadu. This app is lovingly dedicated to several esteemed individuals: Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kumararaman, a retired teacher; Kalaimamani Mr. M. Kannan Kumar; and Kalaimamani Mr. K. Nellai Manikandan from Zamin Kodangipatti, recipients of the Kalaimani, Kalaimani, and Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar awards respectively. My deepest gratitude also goes to my Guru, Mr. E. Rajakamulu, and the inspiring legends of Devarattam.
The primary goal of this app is to showcase Devarattam and its accomplished awardees. Within the app, you'll find detailed information about the dance itself, as well as profiles of its notable performers. Devarattam, performed by the Rajakambalathu Nayakkar community, both historically and in the present day, features a complex and captivating series of movements. While the basic form consists of 32 steps, the dance can incorporate up to 72 steps, many of which are variations on the fundamental movements.
Devarattam dancers are easily recognizable by their distinctive attire and performance style. They gracefully execute the steps while holding handkerchiefs in each hand and wearing salangai (ankle bells) on their legs. The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by the Deva Thunthumi, a traditional musical instrument integral to the dance.
