A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer GBA and DS ports exist on the Switch compared to other consoles. This list features ten standout titles – four GBA and six DS – found outside the Nintendo Switch Online app. No specific ranking is implied. Let's dive in!
Kicking things off with the shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a personal preference, this GBA iteration is a solid alternative. A worthwhile comparison, offering a potentially more streamlined experience. Steel Empire remains enjoyable regardless of the platform, even appealing to those not usually drawn to shooters.
The Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, but its true successor emerged on the GBA. Mega Man Zero initiates an exceptional side-scrolling action series, though its initial entry presents some minor imperfections. Subsequent titles refine the formula, but the first game provides the ideal starting point.
A Mega Man double-feature, justified by the distinct gameplay styles of Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network. This RPG features a unique battle system blending action and strategy. The virtual world concept within electronic devices is cleverly executed. While later installments show diminishing returns, the original offers considerable enjoyment.
The Castlevania Advance Collection boasts several excellent titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the gameplay is exceptionally engaging. A unique setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.
The original Shantae gained cult status despite limited distribution. Shantae: Risky’s Revenge on DSiWare broadened its reach, solidifying Shantae's presence across subsequent console generations. Its origins are somewhat ambiguous, stemming from an unreleased GBA title. Interestingly, that GBA game is slated for release soon and might warrant inclusion on a future list.
Arguably a GBA title due to its origins, Ace Attorney blends investigation and courtroom drama. Its blend of humor and compelling narratives makes it a standout. The first game is exceptional, though later installments also hold merit.
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick shares the same high writing quality but introduces unique gameplay. As a ghost, players utilize abilities to save others and unravel a mystery surrounding their own death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
Considered a top-tier Nintendo DS game, its tight integration with the DS hardware makes porting challenging. The Switch version provides a satisfactory alternative for those without access to original DS hardware. A truly exceptional game.
The recently released Castlevania Dominus Collection encompasses all Nintendo DS Castlevania titles. Dawn of Sorrow stands out due to improved button controls replacing the original's touch controls. However, all three DS games in this collection are highly recommended.
The Etrian Odyssey series thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, but this port is a successful adaptation. Each Etrian Odyssey game is a substantial RPG, with Etrian Odyssey III being the largest and most rewarding.
