This concludes my retro game eShop series, as suitable console selections dwindle. However, I saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's debut console exceeded expectations, boasting a legendary game library still celebrated today. While initially a rival to Nintendo, these titles now offer cross-platform enjoyment. Here are ten favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa, a deserving yet underappreciated 2.5D platformer, stars a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart danger. Its vibrant visuals, tight gameplay, engaging bosses, and surprisingly impactful narrative make it a standout. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, the bundled release is a must-have.
A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII catapulted Japanese RPGs into mainstream Western popularity, becoming Square Enix's biggest success and a key driver of the PlayStation's dominance. Despite the remake's existence, the original remains a worthwhile experience, showcasing the era's distinctive polygonal style. Its enduring appeal is undeniable.
Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise, launching it onto a much larger stage. While later entries embraced increasingly bizarre elements, the original remains a compelling, action-packed adventure reminiscent of G.I. Joe. Its fun gameplay is a significant draw, and the PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on the Switch.
Taito's G-Darius successfully transitioned its classic shoot 'em up formula to 3D. While its polygonal graphics show their age, the vibrant colors, innovative enemy capture mechanic, and creative boss designs create a truly engaging shooter experience.
While overshadowed by its predecessor, Chrono Cross stands on its own merits as a visually stunning RPG with a vast, albeit unevenly developed, cast of characters. Its exceptional soundtrack is a highlight.
From the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X4 stands out with its refined design and balanced gameplay. The Legacy Collection offers a chance to experience this and other titles in the series.
A unique blend of platforming and adventure game elements, Tomba! offers challenging gameplay and a memorable experience from the creator of Ghosts ‘n Goblins.
Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, sharing DNA with Lunar, stands out with its bright and cheerful adventure and satisfying combat system.
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut, offering a focus on tomb raiding. This remastered collection includes the first three games, letting players decide their favorite.
A unique, unconventional RPG (or anti-RPG) with a distinct message and style. While not consistently fun, its originality makes it a noteworthy experience.
