Get ready, Baldur’s Gate 3 fans! The long-awaited final major patch is set to launch, bringing a host of new features and enhancements. Dive into what's coming in this last update and what the future holds for the iconic franchise.
Baldur’s Gate 3's (BG3) eagerly anticipated last major update, Patch 8, will finally be released on April 15. Announced via a Twitter (X) post on April 11 by BG3 developer Larian Studios, this patch will coincide with a Twitch Stream hosted by Senior Systems Designer Ross Stephens, who will delve into the details of what players can expect.
Mark your calendars for the stream, happening on April 16 at 1:00 UTC on Larian Studios' Twitch page. Below is a timetable to help you find the start time in your region:
Larian Studios first hinted at Patch 8 in a November 2024 Steam blog post, teasing fans with promises of 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, and more. Despite being the last major patch, Larian Studios is committed to supporting the modding community, with plans to introduce additional functionality that will empower players to craft their own narratives.
The patch will introduce a variety of new content, including "new abilities, animations, VFX, summons and cantrips, and unique voiced dialogue lines for the Oathbreaker Knight with written reactivity for Oathbreakers, along with a touch of homebrewing on certain actions to enhance your role-playing experience."
Additionally, Patch 8 will include a Photo Mode, offering players a range of options to capture unique in-game moments. These options will encompass camera settings, lens settings, scene settings, post-processing effects, frames, and stickers, allowing for personalized snapshots.
Following the release of Patch 8, Larian Studios will bid farewell to the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to embark on a new creative journey. At the 2024 Game Developers Conference, Larian Studios Founder and CEO Swen Vicke announced that the studio would not pursue any DLC or expansions for BG3, nor would they develop a Baldur's Gate 4. Vicke stated, "Baldur's Gate will always have a warm spot in our heart. We'll forever be proud of it, but we're not gonna continue in it. We're not gonna make new expansions, which everybody is expecting us to do. We're not gonna make Baldur's Gate 4, which everyone is expecting us to do. We're gonna move on - we're gonna move away from D&D and start making a new thing."
While Larian Studios moves on, Wizards of the Coast, the owner of D&D, is set to continue the Baldur’s Gate series. In an April 2024 interview with PC Gamer, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast Senior Vice President of Digital Strategy and Licensing Eugene Evans confirmed ongoing discussions with potential partners to shape the future of the franchise. Evans noted, "So we certainly hope that it's not another 25 years, as it was from Baldur's Gate 2 to 3, before we answer that. But we're going to take our time and find the right partner, the right approach, and the right product that could represent the future of Baldur’s Gate. We take that very, very seriously, as we do with all of our decisions around our portfolio. We don't rush into decisions as to who to partner with on products or what products we should be considering."
Even though Larian Studios will no longer be part of the Baldur’s Gate saga, fans can look forward to the continuation of this beloved series. Baldur’s Gate 3 is currently available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay tuned for more updates by checking out our article below!
