Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has reached the end of its epic journey with the launch of its much-anticipated final patch. On April 15, 2025, Larian Studios unveiled Patch 8, marking the conclusive major update for this acclaimed RPG. The release of this final patch has sparked a significant increase in player engagement, pushing BG3 just outside Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game has now soared to over 169,000 players.

Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared his thoughts on Twitter (X) on April 22 about the sudden spike in player numbers post-Patch 8. He highlighted the robust mod support that allows them to shift focus towards their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will step away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to explore new creative territories.

In light of this move, D&D's parent companies, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, will continue the Baldur’s Gate saga without Larian Studios. They are currently engaging with other studios to potentially develop Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

The much-awaited final patch, announced in a Steam blog post back in November 2024, has now been released. Patch 8 brings an array of exciting new features, including 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, and cross-play capabilities, among other enhancements. A detailed breakdown of the patch's contents was shared on BG3’s official website. Compared to the November 2024 announcement, the latest patch notes boast an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring a polished final experience for BG3.

Larian Studios has poured their heart into perfecting BG3, evident in the comprehensive updates and fixes included in this final version. While this marks their last major update, they have committed to ongoing support for the game's modding community.
