This news comes hot on the heels of trademark registrations for the game name by Death Note’s publisher, Shueisha, in Europe, Japan, and the United States in June of this year. Gematsu noted that the title listed by the said ratings board directly translates to "Death Note: Shadow Mission", but searching [the] website in English confirms the English name of the game as Death Note: Killer Within."

At the time of writing, however, the game may have been removed from the website, as searching for "Death Note" yields different results.

Death Note Games Overview

Although details about gameplay or plot remain under wraps, speculations are already swirling among fans. Given the psychological battles in the Death Note series, many expect a suspenseful experience, similar to the manga and anime. Whether the game will center around the classic cat-and-mouse dynamic between Light Yagami and L, or introduce new characters and scenarios, remains to be seen.

The Death Note franchise has inspired several games over the years, dating back to its first title, Death Note: Kira Game, released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS. This point-and-click game allowed players to take on the role of either Kira or L, in a battle of wits to deduce the identity of their opponent. A sequel, Death Note: Successor to L, and a spin-off, L the ProLogue to Death Note: Spiraling Trap, followed in the span of a year. These games also have similar deduction-based, point-and-click mechanics.

These titles catered mostly to a Japanese audience and had a limited release. If Killer Within materializes, this could mark the franchise’s first major global game release.
