How To Defeat Zhang Jiao In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Conquering Zhang Jiao, the leader of the Yellow Turbans, is one of the first major hurdles in *Dynasty Warriors: Origins*. This guide will walk you through his two-phase battle.

How to Defeat Zhang Jiao: Phase 1

The initial encounter is a one-on-one duel in a vast wasteland. Zhang Jiao employs sorcery, hurling stones across the arena. His attacks vary depending on your distance. Up close, he summons four stones, requiring quick evasion. From afar, he unleashes eight stones in pairs, easily dodged by circling him. Maintain a safe distance when he summons a large volley to avoid heavy damage.

While his attacks primarily keep you at bay, he also possesses close-range combos (parryable) and an area-of-effect (AOE) pushback attack. A glowing white aura signals his charging AOE; retreat to avoid damage. He’ll later use unblockable attacks (red aura), summoning numerous rocks or clones. The best strategy is to maintain distance until these attacks conclude.

A sword is your best weapon for this phase, dealing significantly more damage than spears or gauntlets. Resource management is key. You'll likely have limited healing opportunities (around four times, depending on upgrades). Remember the meat buns near the arena entrance – utilize them for quick healing during breaks in the fight.

How to Defeat Zhang Jiao: Phase 2

Activating Musou Rage triggers Phase 2, bringing Yellow Turban reinforcements. Fortunately, your own army arrives to assist. This provides opportunities to heal using those handy meat buns. Zhang Jiao adds tornadoes to his arsenal, so watch out for these while dealing with his troops.

Zhang Jiao will attempt a Grand Tactic, demanding you eliminate 300 soldiers within a short timeframe. Failure results in a devastating attack. He'll also summon lightning strikes indicated by a closing ring on the ground; evade when the ring flashes. Musou Mode is highly effective for clearing out the soldiers quickly, though basic Musou might be preferable given the time limit.

Foiling his Grand Tactic twice brings Zhang Jiao back to the battlefield, using the same tactics as Phase 1. However, with your army's support, defeating him should be significantly easier.

With Zhang Jiao vanquished, you'll complete Chapter 1. Good luck!

*Dynasty Warriors: Origins* is available now on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
