Following fan backlash over the exclusive New Game Plus mode in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, developer Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio (RGG Studio) has announced a different approach for its upcoming title, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. The New Game Plus mode for Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii will be a free post-launch addition.
Infinite Wealth, while critically acclaimed and nominated for several Game Awards, faced criticism for restricting New Game Plus access to its most expensive editions. RGG Studio didn't reverse this decision, but the Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii announcement suggests a change of heart.
During a recent Like a Dragon Direct, RGG Studio showcased gameplay, including naval combat and crew management. The announcement of the game's editions concluded with the confirmation that New Game Plus would be available to all players at no extra cost via a post-launch patch. A specific release date for the patch was not provided.
This decision marks a positive shift. While deluxe editions often include cosmetic items, locking essential gameplay features behind paywalls is a contentious practice. RGG Studio's response to the Infinite Wealth controversy, by making New Game Plus free in Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, is a welcome change. While players will need to wait for the update, the added content should be available well within the timeframe many players will require to complete their initial playthrough, given the length of typical Like a Dragon games.
With the release date set for February 21st, RGG Studio may offer further previews in the coming weeks. Fans are encouraged to follow the studio's social media channels for updates.
