George R.R. Martin hints at a potential Elden Ring movie, but acknowledges a significant hurdle to his involvement.
The creator of Game of Thrones, who crafted the world and history for FromSoftware's Elden Ring – a 2022 bestseller – has responded to speculation about a film adaptation. While sidestepping questions about a sequel, Martin confirmed discussions regarding an Elden Ring movie are underway.
"Well, I can't say too much about it, but there is some talk about making a movie out of Elden Ring," Martin revealed at IGN Fan Fest 2025.
However, Martin highlighted a major constraint on his participation: the ongoing work on The Winds of Winter. He admitted his current focus on completing his long-awaited novel significantly limits his availability for other projects.
"We'll see if that [the Elden Ring movie] comes to pass and what the extent of my involvement was, I don't know," he stated. "I'm a few years behind with my latest book, so that also limits the amount of things that I can do."
The protracted delay of The Winds of Winter has been a source of considerable fan anticipation and speculation. Martin himself acknowledged the significant delay, stating, "Unfortunately, I am 13 years late...But that’s still a priority."
Martin also detailed his contributions to Elden Ring's world-building, explaining his collaboration with FromSoftware in establishing the game's rich backstory. He revealed extensive discussions and collaborative sessions with the development team, resulting in the creation of a detailed history preceding the game's events. He confirmed that there's additional unused material from his world-building that could potentially feature in future projects.
