Square Enix has temporarily halted the automatic demolition of player homes in Final Fantasy XIV on North American servers due to the ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles. This affects players on the Aether, Primal, Crystal, and Dynamis data centers.
The suspension, implemented on January 9th, comes just one day after the company resumed the automatic demolition timers. These timers, typically set for up to 45 days, are designed to free up housing plots for inactive players and Free Companies. Players can prevent demolition by logging into their homes. However, due to the real-world impact of the wildfires, Square Enix has deemed a temporary pause necessary. The company will announce a resumption date once the situation is assessed.
This is not the first time Square Enix has paused auto-demolitions. A previous pause, ending January 8th, was implemented following Hurricane Helene. This latest action highlights the company's consideration for players affected by significant real-world events. Homeowners can still reset their timers to the full 45 days by visiting their properties.
Square Enix expressed its concern for those affected by the wildfires, noting the widespread impact of the disaster. Beyond Final Fantasy XIV, the wildfires have also impacted other events, including the postponement of a Critical Role campaign finale and the relocation of an NFL playoff game.
The recent suspension of housing demolitions, coupled with the return of a free login campaign, has made for an eventful start to 2025 for Final Fantasy XIV players. The duration of this latest pause remains to be seen.
