Mortal Kombat 1's Ed Boon Hints at Future DLC After Five Million Copies Sold
Ed Boon, chief creative officer of Mortal Kombat 1, recently revealed a sneak peek of the upcoming T-1000 Terminator's Fatality on social media, simultaneously teasing future downloadable content (DLC). This announcement coincided with the release of the Conan the Barbarian guest character and the news that Mortal Kombat 1 has surpassed five million copies sold, a significant increase from the previously reported four million.
Boon shared a brief video showcasing one of the T-1000's Fatalities, a nod to the iconic truck chase scene from Terminator 2: Judgment Day. The accompanying tweet, however, sparked considerable speculation within the Mortal Kombat community: "With Conan getting into player’s hands, we are excited to keep trucking forward with future DLC!"
While this statement could simply refer to the imminent release of the T-1000, many fans interpret it as a hint towards additional DLC characters beyond the current Khaos Reigns expansion. The T-1000 is the final character in this expansion, which also includes Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan.
The question of a potential third DLC pack or Kombat Pack 3 has been a topic of much discussion, fueled by the game's sales success and Warner Bros. Discovery's continued investment in the Mortal Kombat franchise. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav confirmed in November that the company plans to focus on only four key game titles, with Mortal Kombat being one of them.
Adding to the intrigue, Ed Boon previously stated in September that NetherRealm had already chosen its next game three years prior, while assuring fans of continued support for Mortal Kombat 1. Many speculate that this next game will be a third installment in the Injustice series, although neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has confirmed this.
Boon addressed the decision to release another Mortal Kombat game instead of an Injustice title in a June 2023 interview with IGN. He cited the COVID-19 pandemic and the transition to a newer Unreal Engine (Unreal Engine 4 for Mortal Kombat 1, compared to Unreal Engine 3 for Mortal Kombat 11) as significant factors. He explicitly stated that the door remains open for future Injustice games.
The future of the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises remains excitingly uncertain, with Boon's cryptic comments fueling anticipation for what NetherRealm Studios will unveil next.
