Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons could offer a novel functionality: acting as computer mice. While the widespread adoption of this mode by game developers remains uncertain, the possibility aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who previously analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data source has been the origin of numerous Switch 2 rumors since mid-2024.
LiC's latest findings reveal entries for polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles" and intended for "game console handles." The "mouse soles" designation, typically used for the bottom of computer mice, strongly suggests a mouse-like functionality for the new Joy-Cons.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were identified. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, indicating potentially new, unreleased products. The listed size, 90 x 90mm, is large enough to cover the entire back of the Joy-Cons, likely requiring trimming during assembly.
Not a First for Handheld Consoles
While innovative for Nintendo, a mouse-like controller mode isn't unprecedented. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller, which transforms into a mouse when rotated sideways. Lenovo even provides a plastic piece to enhance its smooth operation on surfaces.
The Legion GO also incorporates magnetic rails for controller attachment, a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities offer intriguing parallels between the two devices.
