In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits players near the game's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.
Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this dilemma, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, exploring Baldur's Gate's upper and lower districts. This decision carries significant weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (30+) are needed for optimal companion interactions.
(Spoilers ahead!)
Should You Free Orpheus?
This hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that freeing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids (Mind Flayers).
Siding with the Emperor: He absorbs Orpheus's knowledge, defeating the Netherbrain but potentially alienating Lae'zel and Karlach due to Orpheus's demise.
Freeing Orpheus: The Emperor aligns with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer, but Orpheus joins the fight, even potentially sacrificing himself to save others.
In short, choose the Emperor to avoid Mind Flayer transformation; free Orpheus to risk it. The Emperor's path might lead to Lae'zel's departure and Karlach's return to Avernus.
Moral Considerations:
The "good" choice depends on your perspective. It boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, following Voss and Lae'zel's demands might seem overly forceful. The Gith prioritize themselves, regardless of wider consequences.
The Emperor, conversely, is generally benevolent, aiming to stop the Netherbrain and aid the party. He acknowledges necessary sacrifices, potentially leading to Mind Flayer transformation, but maintaining moral uprightness. Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings; strategic choices can lead to outcomes beneficial to all.
