Osmos Relaunched on Google Play

The acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, Osmos, is back on Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, it's been resurrected by developer Hemisphere Games with a completely new port.

Remember the physics-based, ambient absorber Osmos? The goal was simple: absorb other microorganisms while avoiding the same fate. This award-winning puzzle game's accessibility made it a hit, but Android users were left in the cold—until now.

Years after its 2010 debut, Osmos returns to Google Play, completely rebuilt for modern Android systems. Experience this micro-organic battle royale at its finest!

Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that the original Android version, developed with Apportable, became impossible to update after Apportable's closure. The game was subsequently removed from the Play Store due to incompatibility with current (64-bit) Android devices. This new release is a completely rebuilt port, resolving those issues.

A Cellular Masterpiece

If our enthusiastic reviews of Osmos (for both iOS and Android) and its numerous awards haven't convinced you, the gameplay trailer above should do the trick. Osmos' innovative mechanics have, ironically through a process of osmosis, influenced countless other games. It's a shame it predates the rise of social media; it would undoubtedly be a TikTok sensation.

Osmos is a nostalgic delight, well worth revisiting. It represents a time when mobile game development seemed limitless—a time many hope to see again.
