Path of Exile 2 Expeditions: A Comprehensive Guide

Path of Exile 2 introduces Expeditions, a revamped endgame event from previous leagues. This guide covers Expedition mechanics, rewards, and the passive skill tree. Four major endgame events—Delirium, Breaches, Rituals, and Expeditions—await on the Atlas map.

Locating and Starting an Expedition

Expeditions are marked on the Atlas with a light blue spiral icon. Use an Expedition Precursor Tablet in a completed Lost Tower slot to guarantee an Expedition encounter on a map node. Once in a map, locate the marked area and the four NPCs. They'll offer basic instructions, but mastering the mechanics requires more than their brief explanation.

The core Expedition gameplay involves strategic explosive placement near Markers to spawn Runic Monsters, Unearthed Remnants, and Excavated Chests.

  • Runic Monsters: Spawn near Red Markers. Larger markers yield larger monster packs, enhanced by Unearthed Remnants.
  • Unearthed Remnants: Relics with modifiers. These can boost item rarity from chests but might also increase monster damage.
  • Excavated Chests: Spawn near Black Markers with the spiral symbol. These contain Artifacts, Logbooks, currency, Waystones, and powerful gear.

Use the Explosives UI to carefully place your explosives, ensuring their area-of-effect circles don't overlap for maximum efficiency. Activate the Detonator once placed. If overwhelmed, retreat and return later; the event doesn't end when you leave.

The Expedition Pinnacle Map and Olroth

Runic Monsters and Excavated Chests have a chance to drop Expedition Logbooks. Use these with Dannig in your hideout to access the Expedition Pinnacle Map—a significantly larger event with more explosives.

This map has a chance to feature Olroth, the Pinnacle Boss (indicated by a skull on the minimap). Defeating Olroth is crucial for obtaining Expedition Passive Skill Tree points (double points per victory).

Expedition Passive Skill Tree

Access the Expedition Passive Skill Tree via the Atlas Passive Skill Tree menu (top-left of the Atlas screen, then top-right). This tree enhances Expeditions, increasing rewards and modifying monster spawns and Remnant effects.

The tree features eight Notable nodes and eight difficulty-increasing nodes for Logbooks (and Olroth). Each Notable node requires defeating Olroth at an increased difficulty.

Recommended Notable Nodes:

Prioritize "Disturbed Rest," "Detailed Records," and "Timed Detonations" for significant reward boosts. Then consider "Weight of History," "Unearthed Anomalies," and "Legendary Battles" for further gains, accepting increased difficulty.

Avoid "Extreme Archaeology." While it boosts explosive radius and range, reducing the number of explosives drastically limits overall rewards.

Expedition Rewards

The main rewards are Artifacts, used to trade with specific vendors for gear. Exotic Coinage refreshes vendor inventories.

Artifact Vendor Gear Type
Broken Circle Gwennen Weapons
Black Scythe Tujen Belts & Jewelry
Order Rog Armor
Sun Dannig Other Artifacts
Exotic Coinage All Vendors Inventory Refresh

Expedition Logbooks unlock the Pinnacle Map, offering a chance to fight Olroth for substantial rewards and double Passive Skill Tree points. The higher the Logbook difficulty, the greater the chance of Olroth appearing and the better the loot.
