Speculation surrounding a PlayStation 5 release of Starfield intensified recently after a PlayStation logo appeared on Bethesda's official Creations website, attached to a work-in-progress ship decal. While the Creation was swiftly removed, the incident fueled fan theories about a potential PS5 launch. A Reddit user, u/Dollar99Man, noted the logo's presence, suggesting it might be related to beta testing.
This discovery naturally leads to questions about Bethesda's plans. Could a significant content update, perhaps even a new expansion, coincide with a PS5 release? Recent months have been relatively quiet for Starfield following the release of the less-than-stellar Shattered Space expansion. However, with Microsoft's anticipated summer showcase, an announcement regarding Starfield's future seems plausible. Bethesda itself has hinted at "exciting things" planned for the game this year, addressing player concerns about a lack of communication and updates. In June 2024, Bethesda reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Starfield, confirming at least one additional story expansion beyond Shattered Space. Bethesda Game Studios' Todd Howard, in an interview with MrMattyPlays, even suggested the aim is to release an annual story expansion "hopefully for a very long time."
Starfield, launched in September 2023, marked Bethesda's first new IP in years and its first mainline single-player game since Microsoft's acquisition of ZeniMax Media in March 2021. IGN's review awarded it a 7/10, stating that despite challenges, "the allure of its expansive roleplaying quests and respectable combat make its gravitational pull difficult to resist."
In January, Microsoft's Phil Spencer didn't rule out a PS5 release. Reports from March 2024 suggested both Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle were being considered for PS5. Indiana Jones subsequently received a PS5 release, following its PC and Xbox launch. While Starfield's PS5 release remains unconfirmed, Spencer's comments suggest it's a possibility.
Several Xbox games are already available on PS5, including Sea of Thieves, Hi-Fi Rush, Grounded, and Pentiment. Microsoft also publishes Minecraft on PlayStation and plans to release Doom: The Dark Ages and Ninja Gaiden 4 on PS5 later this year. Forza Horizon 5 is also confirmed for PS5, and reports even suggest a potential Halo release on PlayStation after years of exclusivity.
Spencer has stated that Xbox's multiplatform strategy aims to boost Microsoft's gaming revenue, a significant factor following the Activision Blizzard acquisition. He emphasized the importance of delivering strong results to justify the company's substantial investment in gaming. This strategy focuses on strengthening games across console, PC, and cloud platforms.
Bethesda Game Studios, with 450 employees, currently manages five teams: Starfield, Elder Scrolls 6, Fallout 76, mobile development, and external partnerships.
