Zdarsky's Captain America Relaunch: Marvel Unveils New Era

Marvel Comics is set to relaunch its flagship Captain America series with an all-new creative team and a captivating storyline focusing on Steve Rogers' early days after his revival. This exciting new chapter will even detail Captain America's very first encounter with the iconic Doctor Doom.

As announced at the ComicsPro retailer convention, the series will be penned by Chip Zdarsky (Batman, Daredevil) and illustrated by Valerio Schiti (G.O.D.S., The Avengers), with vibrant colors by Frank D'Armata. This marks a reunion for the trio, who previously collaborated on 2017's Marvel 2-in-One.

The story begins shortly after Steve Rogers' rediscovery and thawing in the modern Marvel Universe. His first mission upon rejoining the U.S. Army? A thrilling infiltration of Latveria, recently seized by a young, ambitious Doctor Doom, alongside the legendary Howling Commandos. While the series will eventually transition to contemporary Marvel continuity, the events of this initial arc will significantly impact Zdarsky and Schiti's overarching narrative.

“I’ve been a huge Captain America fan for decades," Zdarsky shared in a statement. "I loved writing the seasoned, older Cap in Avengers: Twilight, so getting to helm the actual Captain America title feels surreal! We're exploring Cap's early modern era adventures with a surprising twist that will truly shock readers! I'm incredibly excited to share this, especially with Valerio and Frank's phenomenal artwork!”

He continued, “My approach to this title mirrors my Daredevil run—a deep dive into Cap's psyche, offering a grounded, human portrayal within this new world. Steve Rogers represents the best of humanity, and I aim to capture that essence on every page.”

“Captain America is one of my all-time favorite characters," Schiti added. "Reuniting with Chip Zdarsky and Frank D'Armata after our amazing Marvel 2-In-One experience is fantastic, and I'm working on a story that perfectly blends heart, action, and entertainment! Surprisingly, I found myself focusing more on Steve Rogers, the man, rather than solely Captain America.”

Schiti further explained, “Chip's script is brilliantly clever and engaging; readers will undoubtedly connect with Steve's inner turmoil. He embodies truth, justice, and freedom. He fought Nazism, seemingly perished, and returned to continue his fight. That's immense pressure, and considering the timeline, he's only in his late twenties during this era!”

Captain America #1 will be released on July 2, 2025.
