DC Studios co-head James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.
A new 30-second promotional video showcased previously unseen footage, including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during high-speed flight. This aerial shot, however, sparked discussion due to Superman's seemingly unnatural facial stillness while his hair and cape flowed in the wind.
Some viewers attributed the effect to subpar CGI, but Gunn clarified on Threads that no CGI was used on Corenswet's face. He explained the unusual appearance as a result of the close-up wide-angle lens used during filming. The background, shot in Svalbard, Norway, is entirely real.
Despite Gunn's explanation, debate continues, with comparisons drawn to the flying Adam Warlock scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, also directed by Gunn. Regardless of the controversy surrounding this brief clip, anticipation for the Superman film remains high.
The film, opening July 11, 2025, is the inaugural movie of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Further details are available, including analyses of the characters featured in the trailer, Gunn's comments on Krypto's on-screen personality, and discussions on the film's thematic focus on hope.
