Chess Makes its Esports Debut at the 2025 Esports World Cup
The 2025 Esports World Cup (EWC), the world's premier gaming and esports festival, is set to make history by including chess in its tournament lineup. This unprecedented move, a result of a major collaboration between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF), will bring the ancient game to a wider, global audience.
World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to introduce chess to a new generation of players. Carlsen expressed his enthusiasm about chess joining the world's leading esports titles, emphasizing the opportunity to expand the game's reach and inspire future talent.
The EWC will take place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, 2025, featuring a $1.5 million prize pool. Qualification will be determined through the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT), held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four "Last Chance Qualifier" winners, will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the inaugural chess esports event.
To enhance the appeal to esports fans, the 2025 CCT will utilize a fast-paced 10-minute time control format, without increment, for each match. Armageddon tiebreakers will be used to determine winners.
Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has captivated players for centuries. Its digital adaptation, through platforms like Chess.com, has broadened accessibility, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's popularity has also been fueled by media exposure, including streaming services, influencers, and shows such as "The Queen's Gambit."
With its official recognition as an esport, chess is poised for even greater growth and excitement.
