EA's Apex Legends: A Sixth Birthday and Plans for a 2.0 Reboot
As Apex Legends approaches its sixth anniversary, EA acknowledges its underperformance despite a massive player base. While the game boasts over 200 million players, its revenue isn't meeting EA's expectations. CEO Andrew Wilson confirmed this in a recent financial call, stating that while the game's trajectory hasn't met their goals, they are actively working on solutions.
EA's strategy focuses on three key areas: continued community support (including quality-of-life improvements and anti-cheat measures), the creation of new content, and a significant game update, dubbed "Apex Legends 2.0."
Wilson emphasized the ongoing commitment to the tens of millions of daily players, acknowledging that progress on content creation has been slower than desired. Apex Legends 2.0 is envisioned as a major revitalization, attracting new players and boosting revenue. However, its release is strategically planned for after the launch of the next Battlefield game, likely sometime in EA's 2027 fiscal year.
This significant overhaul aims to ensure the longevity of the franchise, mirroring Activision's approach with Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0. While the success of such reboots remains debatable, EA is carefully considering the competitive landscape and player feedback. Despite its current decline in concurrent players on Steam (though still ranking highly), EA remains confident in Apex Legends' potential for long-term growth and success, viewing Apex Legends 2.0 as a crucial step in achieving this. The company plans to continue investing in the game and expanding its appeal to both existing and new player communities.
