The Witcher 4 is in production hell because of the Unreal Engine

Daniel Vavra, the creator of the Kingdom Come trilogy and a co-founder of Warhorse Studios, has openly criticized Unreal Engine, claiming it struggles with creating detailed and expansive open-world environments. Vavra points to the development challenges faced by The Witcher 4, suggesting that the switch to Unreal Engine from the RED Engine has led to significant production issues.

"Unreal is fine for environments like deserts and rocks, but it has historically struggled with rendering trees," Vavra stated. He further criticized Unreal's Nanite technology, asserting that it falls short when it comes to generating vegetation effectively.

According to Vavra, who reportedly spoke with a CD Projekt employee, scenes that functioned seamlessly on the RED Engine are causing prolonged difficulties in Unreal. This has resulted in what is described as "production hell" for The Witcher 4.

Vavra questions the decision to move away from the RED Engine, noting that studios typically develop their own engines for open-world games. He also highlighted the high system requirements of Unreal Engine, stating that it demands computers costing thousands of euros, which are out of reach for many gamers.
