Dragon Age: The Veilguard's Solas: From Vengeful God to Dream Advisor – Early Concept Art Reveals a Darker Vision

Early concept sketches for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, unveiled by former BioWare artist Nick Thornborrow, offer fascinating insights into the evolution of Solas's character. These sketches, created as part of a visual novel used to brainstorm story ideas, reveal a significantly different portrayal of Solas than what ultimately appeared in the final game.

Solas, initially introduced in Dragon Age: Inquisition as a helpful companion, later revealed his treacherous plan to shatter the Veil. This plan forms the core of The Veilguard's narrative. However, Thornborrow's art showcases a much more overtly malevolent Solas.

The sketches, primarily black and white with selective color accents (highlighting elements like the game's lyrium dagger), depict Solas less as a manipulative advisor and more as a vengeful god. While some scenes, such as his initial attempt to tear the Veil, remain largely consistent with the final game, others differ dramatically. These alternative depictions often portray Solas as a colossal, shadowy figure. The ambiguity surrounding these changes leaves open the question of whether these scenes represent events within Rook's dreams or manifestations of Fen'Harel's power in the real world.

The differences between the concept art and the final game are significant, suggesting substantial narrative shifts during development. This isn't surprising, considering the nearly ten-year gap between Inquisition and The Veilguard, along with the late title change from Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. Thornborrow's shared artwork offers fans a valuable glimpse into this evolution, bridging the gap between the game's initial vision and its final release. The contrast highlights a potentially darker, more powerful Solas that was ultimately toned down for the final product.
